21 Savage has announced a deal with Epic Records, the fitting culmination to his torrid 2016. After spending months on Atlanta’s mixtape circuit as a standout, Savage shifted his career into a higher gear with the release of Savage Mode, an album produced entirely by fellow Atlanta native Metro Boomin. In his breakout year, Savage secured four placements on the Hot 100, including a collaboration with Drake, and two solo hits off Savage Mode, “X” and “No Heart.”
“I ain’t wanna just sign on some straight business shit,” Savage told the Rap Radar podcast. “I wanna sign to someone who believes in me and understands me.” Epic has significantly increased their stronghold of talent over the last half-decade, adding acts like Future, Travis Scott, Yo Gotti, DJ Khaled and Bobby Shmurda to their roster. The label’s accomplished and esteemed CEO, L.A. Reid, is an important selling point, which Savage alludes to. “He’s probably the last black CEO. Why not? He’ll understand me before anyone else.”
Recently, Savage has toured with Young Thug, collaborated with Meek Mill, Drake and Chief Keef. You can listen to the full episode below.
