Following the success of The New Edition Story, the 3-part BET miniseries that chronicled the rise, success and fall of New Edition, BET has ordered a new series, Street Dreams, that will similarly chronicle the life of yet another legendary and game-changing act: Nas.
According to Deadline, Nas will executive produce the project, while Jonathan Levine (50/50, The Wackness) will handle the directing duties. The film, which was also written by Levine, will ‘track the ascent of Nas, a young man from the Queensbridge projects who will go on to become a famous rapper, as he evolves from young man to crack dealer to rapper to adult.’
Initially, Levine was set to work on a half-hour comedy, also titled Street Dreams, based on Nas’ life, to coincide with the 20th anniversary of the release of the rappers’ classic debut album, Illmatic. The ratings success of The New Edition Story however, which aired in three 2-hour segments on consecutive nights and and outdid President Trump’s first televised interview as POTUS in ratings, likely urged the network to deliver their Nas story in a similar fashion.
